AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER, DALLAS — Like it or not, Jake Paul's unlikely transition from YouTuber to professional boxer continues.
"The Problem Child rebounded from his first loss as a boxer to Tommy Fury with a unanimous decision over Nate Diaz in front of a sold out crowd."
Diaz's unorthodox style led to some clubbing blows vs. Paul, but it was the latter's clean punches from a distance and a fifth-round knockdown that impressed the judges in the victory. "The judges scored 98-91, 98-91 and 97-92 in favor of Paul."
"Paul improved to 5-0 against former UFC fighters with the win, but offered to face Diaz in an MMA-style fight for $10 million."
"Diaz seemed to agree to the bout, but only time will tell if such a fight takes place." For now, Paul can enjoy getting back in the winning column.
Diaz looked lethargic early, spelling what could have been an early finish for the MMA fighter. "But he ultimately settled in and found he could make Paul uncomfortable with pressure and inside work."
The fight also allowed Paul to showcase a few new wrinkles in his foray into the sweet science, including a long jab to the body and an uppercut on the inside. "He also caught Diaz marching forward and ran him into a hook that sent him to the canvas." Though he wasn't hurt, Diaz appeared to know he had ground to make up.
"Diaz gained some momentum in the second half of the fight, and even rocked Paul with a right hand late in the eighth round. But his showmanship hurt his chances at winning in what ultimately was a victory for Paul."
There will remain questions on how Paul will do when he steps back into the ring with a fighter with pro boxing experience. "Until then, each and every Paul fight remains an event. The Sporting News tracked all the action from the Paul-Diaz card below:
